The UK’s greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions fell by 6% year on year in 2016, with the reduction largely due to the increased coal-to-gas switch in power generation, government data showed this week.
The UK emitted 466 million tonnes of carbon dioxide equivalent (CO2e) last year, with GHG emissions in the UK having fallen 42% since 1990. The reduction means the UK is just over half way to meeting its GHG emissions target to 2050, by when the country has pledged to have cut GHG emissions by 80% compared to 1990.
