Power plight: Ghana's long path to LNG

Only Subscribers can read the full Article

Ghana, like many other African countries, has a thirst for power. Rolling blackouts – called dumsor by Ghanaians – carry a heavy cost to the country’s economy. LNG has been put forward as an ideal solution to its power plight, as well as for suppliers struggling to find new demand markets. Three LNG projects are fighting for the title of the first regas terminal in Ghana and, potentially, Sub-Saharan Africa. However, developers are facing a myriad of challenges, including the poor creditworthiness of gas and power offtakers, competition from domestic production and pipeline imports, as well as infrastructure problems. LNG Business Review explores what progress Ghana’s LNG projects have made, what challenges they face and which one may cross the finishing line first.
