Taiwan’s new government, which took office in May, has a policy of a total phase-out of nuclear power by 2025. A key part of implementing this policy is an ambitious increase in renewables as well as an increase gas-fired power to provide a backup to renewables. Meanwhile, CPC’s position of monopoly LNG importer is under threat, as its main customer for regasified LNG, Taipower, has been given the right to import LNG directly.
