Biomethane is a refined biogas, which itself is the by-product of fermenting substrates (or “feedstocks” for the petrochemically minded). Biogas can be produced from a variety of sources, including landfill, animal waste, wastewater and agricultural waste, from energy crops such as corn, or from forest residues.
The gas can be produced in an anaerobic digester (which ferments waste in the absence of oxygen), via dry fermentation, co-digestion or thermochemical conversion (also known as gasification).
