Taiwan’s new government, which took office in May, has a policy of a total phase-out of nuclear power by 2025. A key part of implementing this policy is an ambitious increase in renewables as well as an increase gas-fired power to provide a backup to renewables. Meanwhile, CPC’s position of monopoly LNG importer is under threat, as its main customer for regasified LNG, Taipower, has been given the right to import LNG directly. LNG Business Review considers the outlook for LNG demand in Taiwan.
