The Canadian government has announced plans to almost completely phase out traditional coal-powered generation not equipped with carbon capture and storage (CCS) technology by 2030 in a bid to cut greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions.
The regulatory actions announced this week would increase the share of so-called “non-emitting sources” – hydro, nuclear and renewables CCS-fitted thermal plants – in Canada’s electricity mix from 80% at present to 90% by 2030.
