Donald Trump’s rise to power this year took most commentators by surprise. Few would have expected him to win the Republican nomination, let alone become president-elect.
For the US fossil fuel industry, this is undoubtedly good news, shown most clearly by Trump’s appointment of Exxon CEO Rex Tillerson as secretary of state. Critics say the 64-year-old oil boss has no political experience, while others counter that in his capacity as the head of ExxonMobil, Tillerson has more practical experience of geopolitics than other contenders – as well as personal relationships with heads of state and energy ministers the world over.
