European utilities warned this week that a proposed cap on some UK retail gas and electricity tariffs could hit profit margins for suppliers such as British Gas and make the market less competitive.
Preliminary plans being considered for inclusion in the ruling Conservative party manifesto for the upcoming UK general election to impose an upper limit to standard consumer energy tariffs have been met by withering criticism from energy bosses and opposition parties.
