The next UK government is increasingly likely to have a strong mandate to intervene directly in the country’s energy market, with the ruling Conservative and opposition Labour parties this week setting out interventionist policy pledges in their party manifestos.
Labour wants to renationalise the energy network operators and introduce state-owned suppliers. Both parties have pledged to impose a cap on energy prices to address affordability in the run-up to the general election in June.
