Veteran left-of-centre politician Moon Jae-in was sworn in as South Korea’s new president on 10 May. Moon has pledged to make the environment the centre of his government’s energy policy and is keen to replace both coal-fired power plants and nuclear power with gas and renewables. This, some analysts believe, could lead the world’s second biggest importer of LNG to seek more volumes.
By 2030, Moon would like to increase South Korea’s use of natural gas from 18% to 27% of its electricity generation, while increasing renewables, which now consist mainly of hydro power, from 5% to 20%.
