A quiet revolution is afoot in small-scale LNG storage and regasification. Before the end of September, Belgian shipping group Exmar plans to receive the world’s first unmanned, floating LNG storage and regasification barge (FSRB) which some believe will offer substantial savings and newfound flexibility compared to its larger, fully-staffed cousin, the FSRU.
Meanwhile, a growing cohort of companies are rolling out projects in northwest Europe to break large seaborne cargoes into smaller parcelled shipments for use later in bunkering or as fuel for towns and industrial clients located off-grid. These developments mirror a trend in liquefaction, where engineering firms are moving to make the facilities of tomorrow smaller, cheaper and more flexible in order to unlock new value chains.
