The global LNG industry is witnessing the build-up of a great first wave of US output, as five new projects – Elba Island, Cove Point, Freeport, Cameron and Corpus Christi – come on stream within the next couple of years to join Cheniere’s operational Sabine Pass project.
A second wave of US LNG, based on projects which have not yet taken FID, looks set to follow – and its potential scale is vast. The US Department of Energy records that total applications to export LNG from the US amount to some 54 Bcf/day. Taking away projects that have already been abandoned or taken FID still leaves 27.5 Bcf/day, equivalent to around 200 mtpa of LNG.
