In April 2019, actor and comedian Volodymyr Zelensky won the second round of elections to become the sixth president of Ukraine. By July, his newly-formed Servant of the People party won a strong majority in parliamentary elections with 43% of the popular vote. This sizeable political mandate should grant Zelensky the chance to pursue his anti-corruption and anti-oligarch platform and continue the long-overdue clean-up of the country’s gas industry initiated by his predecessor, Petro Poroshenko. Yet, as Ukraine’s gas industry found itself drawn into a US election scandal, Zelensky’s commitment to clean up the country has proved problematic. Despite his enthusiasm, natural gas market reform in Ukraine, which holds one of Europe’s largest untapped natural gas resources, still seems a far-off goal.
