Islamist insurgents in Mozambique have captured a key port used by Total in the gas-rich Cabo Delgado province, after “intense” fighting forced Mozambique’s security forces into retreat. The captured port town of Mocimboa da Praia lies just 60 km away from the site of the under-construction 12.88 mtpa Mozambique LNG mega-project, backed by around USD 16 billion in finance from international public and private institutions.
