Italy has been one of Europe’s most affected countries by the war in Ukraine and the continent’s consequent need to reduce its Russian gas imports. Two years from the start of the war, the once highly Russia-dependent gas consumer has succeeded in radically transforming its natural gas market by diversifying supply sources while also greatly reducing consumption.
Looking forward, reducing the overall role natural gas plays in Italy’s economy is set to be a massive challenge, as the country’s LNG import capacity expands and new gas pipelines are being planned, while the country has yet to finalise its energy strategy in the lead-up to 2030, Italy-based commentators tell Gas Matters.
