The absence of Russian gas in Germany’s energy mix could have dire consequences for its economy and climate policy in the short and long term. Europe’s biggest gas market – it consumed 90.5 Bcm in 2021, 16% of the European total – is currently not receiving any gas directly from Russia, and few believe it will import any volumes from Gazprom ever again. The government’s target of phasing out Russian gas by 2024 seems to have been accomplished prematurely, owing to the sabotaged Nord Stream infrastructure and Moscow’s sanctioning of the Yamal pipeline.
