Brazil produces around 22% of the world’s biofuels and has more arable land than any other country in the world. It is also a pioneer in the biofuels industry, having introduced a nationwide programme to boost ethanol production in 1975 in response to the global oil crisis of the 1970s. The country’s biofuels output reached a record high in 2023 as it produced 35.4 billion litres of ethanol and 7.5 billion litres of biodiesel. The vast majority is absorbed by Brazil’s large internal market, with only 7% of the ethanol produced in the country last year shipped abroad.
