LNG in the Caribbean: Island importers consider next steps in energy transition

This month marks five years since Jamaica commissioned its first gas-fired power station – a long-held plan that was finally realised thanks to an LNG supply solution provided by New Fortress Energy (NFE). LNG has helped Jamaica rely less on oil for electricity generation – gas-fired power doubled year on year in 2020 – but the Caribbean island nation is now also looking to increase the share of renewables in its power mix, though it has yet to flesh out its energy transition drive beyond the 2030s.

Elsewhere in the Caribbean, the Dominican Republic and Puerto Rico both began importing LNG in the early 2000s. However, while the former is looking to develop a second regas terminal to support the growth of gas-fired power and the supply of LNG by truck, Puerto Rico, having experienced the devastating impact of climate change in the form of two successive hurricanes in 2017, has hardened its stance towards LNG and is determined to derive all its power from renewables by 2050.
