Italy may be Europe’s third biggest consumer of natural gas, but the country’s – and the Mediterranean’s – second largest island, Sardinia, had until very recently been virgin territory to gas. The start-up of a small-scale LNG terminal on the island’s west coast last year finally put an end to this, kickstarting what the Italians refer to as Sardinia’s ‘metanazione,’ or ‘methanisation.’ While gas will help Sardinia phase out coal, there are those who believe that it should skip natural gas and LNG altogether and focus instead on harnessing its abundant solar and wind resources.
