Maritime shipping represents around 3% of global greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions. According to the International Maritime Organisation (IMO), the sector’s regulator, emissions from shipping are set to increase by up to 50% by the middle of the century if no action is taken.
Shipping companies are taking different approaches to future-proof their operations, including shifting to transition fuels, such as LNG, and – in the longer term – to sustainable fuels, including green ammonia and green methanol.
Among them, Norway-headquartered global bulk liquid shipping company Odfjell has focused on a strategy of reducing emissions mainly through retrofits and component upgrades. In this interview, its chief sustainability officer, Øistein Jensen, explains how the shipping sector is preparing for a net-zero future, just as competition for green fuels intensifies with other sectors.
