China has begun work on Line D, the fourth expansion of the Central-Asia China gas pipeline, which will increase Central Asian supply capacity from Turkmenistan to China to around 85 Bcm/year by visual_editor016. But Beijing is taking a huge risk; by diversifying the pipeline route away from Kazakhstan and through Tajikistan and Kyrgyzstan, China plans to place the security of its Line D pipeline infrastructure, and nearly a third of its Central Asian gas supply, in the hands of some of the most volatile countries in the region. Gas Strategies investigates the challenges facing China in its quest for supply diversification.
