Chinese investment is playing an increasingly role in developing the nascent power sector sub-Saharan Africa, but cost and infrastructure issues continue to favour large hydropower projects over gas-fired plants, the International Energy Agency (IEA) said in a special report this week.
According to the IEA, Chinese companies were the main contractors for 30% of all capacity additions in sub-Saharan Africa in 2010-2015, with the most projects focused on expanding access to electricity.
