The UK has given French energy firm EDF the green light to build the 3.2 GW Hinkley Point C plant in Somerset, in what could become the country's first new-build nuclear project in 20 years.
The decision comes shortly after an independent report commissioned by the government suggested that operating gas-fired plants equipped with carbon capture and storage (CCS) technology would cost 10% less than the subsidised ‘strike price’ [1] promised to Hinkley Point during its operating life.
