Gas demand will continue rising sharply in the coming decades and overtake coal as the leading source of energy across the globe by 2040, the International Energy Agency (IEA) predicted in its latest World Energy Outlook released on Wednesday morning.
The report’s midrange New Policies Scenario estimated global annual gas demand to increase by nearly 50% to 5.2 Tcm in 2040, compared to 3.5 Tcm in 2014, with support from climate pledges made at the COP21 conference in Paris last year.
