“Super giant”, “largest gas field in the Mediterranean” and “doubling of Egypt’s gas reserves” are some of the epithets used to describe the Zohr discovery. Located in the Shourok offshore block, 200 km offshore Egypt and within 6 km of the Egypt-Cyprus Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ) border, the hope for many is that Zohr will be a game changer for the wider region. Indeed, with ever-improving technology reducing the costs of deepwater exploration and development, the East Mediterranean has become a play of greatly renewed interest to IOCs. Gas Matters examines the prospects that Zohr ‘as teacher’ may bring to the region as a whole – one of which is the possibility of Cyprus becoming a regional hub and a conduit for the export of Israeli gas.
