South Korea’s new left-of-centre president, Moon Jae-in, is embarking on a new energy path that could see Asia’s fourth largest economy – home to 51 million inhabitants – reduce its long-established reliance on coal and nuclear power for electricity generation in favour of renewables and gas. How this policy could unfold, and even to what degree it can be implemented, is cause for debate, given both geopolitical and domestic considerations. The matter at hand is how the country, currently the world’s second largest LNG importer after Japan, would procure more LNG in an oversupplied market until at least the start of the next decade.
