An LNG tanker has set sail from Norway to South Korea via the East Siberia Sea on the icy and inhospitable Northern sea route, which halves the time it takes to reach Asia compared to the 30-day voyage via the Suez Canal.
The expedition by the Christophe de Margerie is the first undertaken by an unescorted merchant LNG vessel on the trans-Siberian route. Previous attempts have been escorted by separate ice-breakers.
