There has been some bad news for CCS recently. The much-publicised Kemper County power project in the US, which has been under construction for seven years at a cost of some USD 7 billion has finally been abandoned as a CCS project, and is to be converted into a conventional gas-fired CCGT. Shortly thereafter, European utility majors Engie and Uniper withdrew from the ROAD CCS demonstration project in the Netherlands.
With both of these projects apparently scuppered, ten large scale CCS projects remain in the power sector, of which just two are in operation and none based on gas-fired power.
