Next year will see the start-up of a small-scale LNG-to-power scheme in Gibraltar that will replace diesel-fuelled power generation with less polluting, more reliable technology that will be cheaper to run.
The Mediterranean’s largest bunkering port also has ambitions to become an LNG bunkering provider. Shell has emerged as the LNG supplier to both initiatives.
Gibraltar’s new 88 MW gas-fired power plant will have the capacity to supply most of the electricity the British Overseas Territory is likely to need in the foreseeable future. But the project has had to survive years of local political wrangling to get as far as it has.
