LNG-fuelled trucking in Europe is making inroads – slowly but steadily. There currently are around 6,000 LNG-fuelled heavy-duty trucks operating on the continent’s roads, with 212 LNG fuelling stations serving them. The segment’s growth faces many challenges, but more restrictive emissions targets for transportation, allied to other non-diesel solutions remaining unsuitable for long-haul distances, are expected to support the development of LNG-fuelled trucking in Europe in coming years.
A main driver in the segment’s development is regulation. New EU binding targets approved by the EU Parliament in April this year require CO2 emissions from heavy-duty vehicles such as trucks and lorries to be reduced by 30% by 2030, with an intermediate reduction target of 15% by 2025. These new limits are part of the wider Clean Mobility Package, first put forward by the EU Commission in 2018.
