The military coup d’etat that took place in Myanmar on 1 February 2021 has thrown the future of the country’s LNG-to-power sector into uncertainty. Western and other foreign energy companies are reviewing their operations due to the escalating social unrest, potentially paving the way for Chinese entities to increase their presence.
Rapid economic growth has contributed to Myanmar’s booming demand for electricity, with LNG-to-power seen as key to tackling blackouts and power shortages. But the military coup, which deposed the democratically elected National League for Democracy (NLD) ruling party, has clouded the outlook for foreign investment, which is sorely needed to get projects up and running.
