The Covid-19 pandemic may have slowed the development of LNG as transport fuel in Europe, mainly due to the disruption it caused to automotive manufacturing, but the segment continues to grow across the continent, driven by a growing fuelling station network, a broadening range of vehicles available and regulatory support in several European countries.
However, fuel availability, especially of renewable origin, a lack of sufficient refuelling points in some parts of Europe and residual competition from more polluting fuels have made the adoption of LNG in the mobility sector patchy across the region, industry sources tell LNG Business Review.
