In the first half of this year, the US overtook Australia and Qatar to become the world’s largest LNG producer and exporter, having supplied 40.3 mt, up by 7 mt, or 21%, year on year. Already home to the world’s largest LNG production capacity, it is poised to extend its lead over its rivals, as US projects currently under construction come onstream between now and the middle of the decade.
The amount of new capacity proposed by credible sponsors is staggering. The second feature in this two-part series examines the numerous liquefaction expansions and new projects in the US that are under construction or waiting to take final investment decision (FID). How much more capacity is likely to be built? Which are the most credible projects? And what will be the critical constraints?
