South-east Asia has for years been dubbed the next ‘Eldorado’ for the LNG business. Home to an increasingly dynamic LNG buyer, Thailand, and two major emerging economies, Vietnam and the Philippines, that are in urgent need of replacing their declining domestic gas volumes and moving away from coal, the region has seen a slew of regas project proposals to serve its needs. But against the backdrop of prohibitively high gas prices and increased competition from renewables, is it time to rein in the LNG sector’s expectations of south-east Asia’s potential?
