Colombia’s left-wing President Gustavo Petro, who took office in August 2022, has introduced bold energy transition plans for his oil-exporting and gas-consuming country, which include putting a stop to new oil and gas licenses. While his ambition to use more low-carbon sources of energy chimes with the global call for climate action, there are concerns – even from within his own cabinet – that his stance on gas could not only aggravate Colombia’s ability to meet its gas needs but also hinder its energy transition.
