With the global demand for electric vehicles (EVs) hitting new heights, lithium is growing in importance, turning into a vital resource for the transport sector’s electrification drive. Known for its roles in ceramics, glass, and greases, lithium has now entwined its destiny with the booming industry of rechargeable batteries, supporting an array of cutting-edge technologies, from everyday smartphones to futuristic EVs.
According to a report published in April by the International Energy Agency (IEA), in 2017 battery manufacturing for EVs accounted for 15% of global lithium demand but by 2022 this figure had surged to 60%.
