A number of ambitious interconnection projects for importing electricity from the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) region to Europe are being pursued, but uncertainties linked to costs and environmental credentials are pressing. If everything goes to plan, by the end of this decade Europe could be served by a number of new bi-directional electricity interconnectors with the MENA region. The optimistic view is that these new interconnectors will give access to additional sources of renewable electricity and boost security of power supply. In some cases, they could also enable electricity exports from Europe to the MENA region when conditions allow.
