According to Nikos Mantzaris, partner, co-founder and senior policy analyst at The Green Tank, the Athens-based think tank, Russia’s invasion of Ukraine in February 2022 “shattered the dogma” of natural gas as a transition fuel.
“Before the war, we thought it was impossible to carry out the energy transition without gas,” he explains during a face-to-face interview in the Greek capital. “The EU was targeting a 29% reduction in its gas demand by 2030 compared to 2019 levels. After the invasion, essentially overnight, this 29% became 52%.”
According to Mantzaris, this sea change showed that the concept of fossil gas as transition fuel “was dogmatic, not proved by anything before,” and that a significant reduction in the EU’s fossil gas consumption, spearheaded by energy efficiency and a continued ramp up in renewables, “is possible.”
