Italy is keen to position itself as a southern European hub for carbon capture and storage (CCS). It plans to do so by leveraging its depleted oil and gas fields and favourable geographical position, which could serve the decarbonisation needs of neighbouring countries. But lingering concerns over the effectiveness of the technology and pacing of its development, not to mention the lack of a regulatory framework to support the sector’s growth in the EU’s third biggest economy, raise questions over the future success of this strategy, industry experts tell Gas Matters.
