As election season kicked off in the UK, the energy sector caught some of the headwinds, with senior questions being put to the UK's ruling and opposition parties. Meanwhile, in South Africa, where the results of the country's elections are imminent, questions surfaced over what the future would hold for the country's energy plans following its publication of the master gas plan weeks before polling day.

In the US, the ConocoPhillips USD 22bn purchase of Marathon Oil marked a strategic moved to build out US assets, and a firmer LNG position, while the EU's member states successfully pushed Germany into getting rid of a controversial levy on cross-border gas flows.

In special news analyses, Gas Matters Today also unpacks what the future holds for Japan's LNG plans amid nuclear restarts, as well as a feature considering the Middle East's LNG plans amid the US pause.
